Edv ard Munch, the Modern Eye
The Centre Pompidou
21 September 2011 to 9 January 2012
Organised in close collaboration with the Munch Museum in Oslo, this exhibition brings together a collection of major works by the artist,
the like of which has rarely been possible in France. Entitled Edvard Munch, the Modern Eye, this innovative and scientifically challenging
project proposes a dialogue between the pictorial works of the artist in the 20th century and his interest in the most modern forms of
representation: photography, cinema, as well as the renaissance of theatre productions at the time. Often portrayed as a 19th century
painter, and as a symbolist.
Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
Musée de l’Orangerie
27 September 2011 to 16 January 2012
Musée de l’Orangerie
For the first time in France and as part of the Year of Mexico celebration, this exhibition is devoted to the famous couple of Diego Rivera
(1886-1957) and Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). The generous loan of one hundred works from the Dolorès Olmedo foundation in Mexico provides
visitors with an opportunity to discover the world of these two legendary lovers, whose work has come to symbolise the intellectual and
artistic effervescence of post-revolutionary Mexico. The story of Diego and Frida is inseparable from their faith in art created for the benefit
of the Revolution. It is expressed in an introspective way for Frida, for whom suffering was her true and only model, while Diego, both a
society painter and a figure who was engaged politically, deploys his talents as a muralist to affirm the greatness of the working and rural
classes. The originality of this exhibition lies in the presentation of their works together, as if to confirm their impossible divorce and to
underline the deep convergence of their worlds and their creations. On both sides of this deep-rooted attachment to the Mexican soil and
its ancestral cultures can be seen a fascination for the cycle of life and death, realism and mysticism, and workers and peasants alike.
In the Kingdom of Alexander the Great. Ancient Macedonia
Musée du Louvre
Early October 2011 – Early January 2012
Comprising around five hundred works, some on view to the public for the first time, this exhibition retraces the history of ancient Macedonia
from the 15C BC to the time of the Roman Empire. In particular, it attempts to explain the rise in power of the kingdom of Macedonia
against the Greek city-states, with a chronological timeline illustrated by complete funerary displays. The exhibition’s layout, which is
also theme-based, enables visitors to appreciate several aspects of the Macedonian civilisation such as the organisation of its kingdom,
artistic production, education, the worlds of both men and women, religion and death. The exhibition also highlights the development of
Macedonia under Roman domination. The last section is dedicated to the genesis of Alexander’s legend in Antiquity.

amassed in their own home artistic works from across the avant-garde spectrum, in so doing bringing together one of the world’s most
extraordinary modern art collections. This exhibition paints a portrait of these extraordinary characters via some 120 masterpieces by
Renoir, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, Manguin, Bonnard, Vallotton, Laurencin, Gris, Masson, Picabia etc.
Diane Arbus
Jeu de Paume
17 October 2011 to 5 March 2012
The first retrospective dedicated to Diane Arbus (1923-1971) in France for 30 years.
This exhibition brings together over 200 black and white images by this great American photographer whose work had a profound effect on
the development of photographic art.
Diane Arbus took most of her inspiration from New York City, which she saw as both a known territory and a foreign land, and where she
would take photographs of strangers in the street. Fascinated by unusual characters, she also captured images of transvestites, the mentally
handicapped, twins, small people etc. By mixing the familiar with the bizarre, Diane Arbus paints an unsettling picture of 1960s America.
